With Middle East countries in turmoil the subject of Internet censorship has been a major focal point of the civil unrest. The civil protests and unrest in the Middle East were dubbed the “Twitter Revolution” or the “Facebook Revolution” by many reporters and media outlets. The Internet was considered a major factor in the organization and leadership developing a voice to assemble the masses and call for change.
The reaction of Egypt and several other countries to pull the plug on their countries Internet met with mixed results. In Egypt the move was considered a deciding factor in the push to remove Hosni Mubarak from office. In Iran it appears to have temporarily derailed efforts to change the government through civil protests.
