Brian Peterman blogs primarily on border and transportation security issues, with emphasis on maritime homeland security, interagency coordination, and international development.
Brian Peterman recently founded Eldred Rock Associates, LLC to provide strategic guidance to the private and public sectors in the areas of maritime safety and security, border security and emergency management. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard on September 1, 2008 after 36 years of service to our Nation. His final assignment was Commander, Atlantic Area where he oversaw all Coast Guard activities within the eastern half of the world ranging from the Rocky Mountains to the Arabian Gulf.
Prior to that assignment he was the Commander, U.S. Coast Guard District Seven headquartered in Miami, Florida. There he was at the forefront of preventing illegal immigrants from entering the U.S., fighting the narco-terrorism campaign in the Caribbean and Atlantic areas in conjunction with SOUTHCOM, responding to eight deadly hurricanes, and managing an aggressive commercial vessel safety program. Also during this period, he was appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security as the Principle Federal Official (PFO) for Hurricane Ophelia.
Brian Peterman also has extensive national policy experience. He served as a Director in the Defense Policy and Arms Control on the White House National Security Council staff during the Clinton Administration and led efforts to respond to Gulf War Illness claims. Immediately following the terrorist attacks in September 2001, he was called back to the White House where he served for two-and-a-half years as the Special Assistant to the President for Border and Transportation Security on the Homeland Security Council staff. In this position he bolstered the security of our borders through immigrations and customs improvements, and put safeguards in place to reduce the vulnerability of all modes of transportation. In addition, he helped plan and establish the Department of Homeland Security.
Brian Peterman earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education (Biology) from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and a Master of Science Degree in 1988 from the Naval War College. His military awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Cutterman’s insignia and the Presidential Service insignia.
