The Department of Justice and FBI Monday announced a multinational effort to disrupt the GameOver Zeus botnet, which is believed to be responsible for the theft of millions of dollars from businesses and consumers in the United States and around the world. Gameover Zeus, also known as “Peer-to-Peer Zeus,” is an extremely sophisticated type of malware designed to steal banking and other credentials from the computers it infects. It then uses those credentials to initiate or re-direct wire transfers to accounts controlled by cyber criminals.
