Jonathan Rath Hoffman blogs primarily on border security issues and the role of state and local governments in homeland security.
Mr. Hoffman is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Programs (IGP) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where he helped coordinate the relationship between state, local and tribal governments and the DHS. This coordination included work on emergency disaster response, grant allocation, information sharing and policy development.
Prior to joining IGP, Mr. Hoffman was the Director of International Programs and Border Security Policy at the White House’s Homeland Security Council. In this capacity he advised the White House on border security during the thwarted 2007 attempts to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform, marshaled the deployment of 6,000 National Guardsmen under Operation Jumpstart, and exercised oversight of DHS’ Secure Border Initiative and SBInet efforts. While at the White House he founded the interagency Border Facilitation Working Group to facilitate cross-border trade and travel.
Mr. Hoffman joined the federal government in 2003 as the Associate General Counsel of the 2004 G8 Summit Planning Organization at the U.S. Department of State. He later served as the Special Assistant to the Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He was also an Advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Homeland Security.
Mr. Hoffman is a Principal with Summit Strategies LLC, a Washington D.C.-based homeland security and government relations consulting practice, where he provides corporate and government clients with advice and strategic counsel to address critical border security issues and on how best to work with DHS and the larger federal homeland security apparatus. Mr. Hoffman is also a Senior Consultant with the Chertoff Group.
