The United States faces a new set of risks that are yet to be fully understood, says George Haddow, author of the new book, “Disaster Communications.” There is also a whole new set of online media — blogs, vlogs, podcasts and social networks — that emergency managers must factor into their planning and response.
The challenge, he says, is for emergency managers to learn how to communicate about these new risks to the public through these new channels.
Haddow is a research scientist at the Institute for Crisis, Disaster and Risk Management at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and is a former deputy chief of staff at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
