A pair of U.S. senators on Thursday unveiled legislation to renew programs aimed at thwarting potential transfers of weapons of mass destruction and other illicit cargo through U.S. seaports (see GSN, Jan. 29, 2010).
The SAFE Port Reauthorization Act of 2011 — introduced by Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) — would renew provisions in the 2006 SAFE Port Act such as the Container Security Initiative, which deploys equipment at ports around the world to help scan U.S.-bound cargo for weapons materials.
