Justice Department Sends the Wrong Message in Holy Land Foundation Case

The decision of the Justice Department not to prosecute the Council on American Islamic Relations and other unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation case is discouraging and very troubling. 246 individuals and organizations were designated as unindicted co-conspirators in the Hamas terror finance case, the United States v. Holy Land Foundation. The failure to further prosecute this case clearly sends the wrong message.

Cyberspace – The Final, Final Frontier

The opening of the the original Star Trek TV series began with a statement – “space, the final frontier.” In the beginning of the 21st century, America is coming to grips with another new frontier – the final, final frontier of cyberspace. America’s government, dominant as a 20th century nation state, is still coming to grips with the dangers of this space. And its actions, so far, have been a tangled mess. We seem adrift in where we are and what we should do.

Secure Facilities Bill Offers Resources for Federal Protective Service

With all of the budget battling on Capitol Hill lately, some people may have missed that the Secure Facilities 2011 bill has been re-introduced by Senator Lieberman. In some of our eyes this bill is equally important not only to the great men and women of the Federal Protective Service (FPS) but to all of the federal employees housed and members of the public that visit our 9000 federally owned and leased facilities.

He posits that we are in an era of great peace and stability. To downplay the threat of bioterrorism, Mr. Healy quotes Milton Leitenberg from the University of Maryland: “The idea that four guys in a cave are going to create bioweapons from scratch — that will be never, ever, ever.” The statements of both Mr. Healy and Mr. Leitenberg require rebuttal.

FDA to Monitor Radiation Levels of Japanese Seafood: Uh Oh!

By Doug Doan
The FDA has decided to start monitoring the radiation levels of Japanse Exports. No doubt the announcement was carefully constructed to make Americans feel better about the food they eat, while simultaneously reminding everyone that the FDA is on the job of food safety. It might just work too. Most Americans, have absolutely no idea how products are screening at our various Ports of Entry before they enter the United States. But for anyone that has been around a bit, the FDA announcement can only be viewed with intense skepticism.

A Better Way – Ridge Headlines Plan to Strengthen TSA

An industry group released a report advocating for major changes in how the federal government tackles its aviation security mission. In addition to 14 primary recommendations is a broader theme that the political climate in which DHS and TSA operate needs to change. aFormer DHS Secretary Tom Ridge, former Democratic Congressman Jim Turner, and Sabre Holdings CEO Sam Gililland served as co-chairs of a panel of external experts advising the U.S. Travel Association on the report, which I helped research and develop over the past year.
