Department of Homeland Security – Reference Aid: Domestic Extremism Lexicon

This document is a DHS Reference Aid created by the Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) to “provide operational and intelligence advice and assistance to other elements of DHS, as well as state, local, and regional fusions centers.”

Here is a sampling of the terms defined by DHS:

Aryan prison gangs: Individuals who form organized groups while in prison and advocate white supremacist views. Group members may continue to operate under the auspices of the prison

Cuban independence extremism: A movement of groups or individuals who do not recognize the legitimacy of the Communist Cuban Government and who attempt to subvert it through acts of violence, mainly within the United States.

direct action: Lawful or unlawful acts of civil disobedience ranging from protests to property destruction or acts of
violence. This term is most often used by single-issue or anarchist extremists to describe their activities.
